Perseverate

Postby Slava » Sat Apr 11, 2009 8:54 pm

From dictionary.com:

verb (used without object), -at⋅ed, -at⋅ing.
to repeat something insistently or redundantly: to perseverate in reminding children of their responsibilities.
Origin:
1910–15; back formation from perseveration

1. Psychology
1. Uncontrollable repetition of a particular response, such as a word, phrase, or gesture, despite the absence or cessation of a stimulus, usually caused by brain injury or other organic disorder.
2. The tendency to continue or repeat an act or activity after the cessation of the original stimulus.
2. The act or an instance of persevering; perseverance.

I just watched "The Aviator" and perseveration appears several times in the person of Mr. Hughes.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
