pillion

Postby hcbowman » Mon Jul 18, 2005 8:55 am

As an inveterate motorcyclist, I'd like to suggest pillion, which enjoys prominent billing in the recent Chatham House report:
"Riding pillion with a powerful ally has proved costly in terms of British and US military lives, Iraqi lives, military expenditure, and the damage caused to the counter-terrorism campaign."
Riding pillion means taking the rear seat on a motorcycle or horse. A number of sources on the web say it derives from the Latin word pellis, meaning 'animal hide,' via the Scots Gaelic pillean, meaning 'rug.'

It's now been done twice (http://www.alphadictionary.com/goodword/word/pillion), but that shouldn't keep our motorcyclist away. Where have you gone, hcbowman?

Interesting the rear seat on a horse or cycle comes from
the Latin word for "hide", I suppose the leather seat
or saddle or whatever. Seems very awkward to me.
