Agnate

Postby Flaminius » Fri Dec 09, 2005 9:12 pm

Agnate is a kinsman on one's father's side. I find this word funny since taking [out] one letter at a time can reduce it to a letter without losing sense on the way.

Hmmm... I see!

I wonder how many words you can do that to.

Word games with deletions are lots of fun, to those of that turn of mind. Homo ludens....

Another renewal of a long-lost suggestion.

Question, is my Father's brother's wife an agnate? She's obviously not male, but traceable only via the male line.

And, of course, I have to ask, what's the opposite? What is the feminine equivalent of agnate?

By the way the M. Henri Day link still works, and has lots of great stuff.

And the link still works even though the thread died. But
only a few months ago. Might be interesting to
continue:certainly is brain food to play with words this
way.
