cudgel

Postby sardith » Mon Feb 15, 2010 12:27 pm

Dr. Goodword,
I would like to know about this word. I was reading and came across it, referring to fighting, but am interested as to why you would need to 'cudgel your brains' if you wanted to remember something. Can you help me out? :?

Interesting post pointing out an interesting aspect of that word.
The only think I can remotely think of is that there must have been some attempt at equating thinking hard, forcing some info or idea out of a brain with beating someone or something.

That is odd.

Good post, sardith.

There are people who do actually pound their heads when trying to recall something. Usually with the heel of the hand.

Would it make it an even better post if I told you that I found this word in my newly found translation of the Greek New Testament? Interesting....

Is that the word itself, or the idea of abusing one's cranium? The cudgel has been around for a long, long time. How long have we been beating ourselves to remember things? I don't recall.

Oh, I'm sorry, just the word itself, not the bashing one's head part. :)

Apparently both have been around for a long time...it is supposed that is how Abel met his demise...since this was pre-CSI we're not sure if it was a cudgel or a rock.
