So, KatyBr, why do you think peer can mean both equal and better? Peer means an equal, peerless means having no equal. It doesn't have any effect on the meaning of peer.

Hate to quibble, but isn't that really what we're here for at times?

A good word, though, and deserving of inclusion in the GW Dictionary.

My guess is she was thinking of English "peers" and the English peerage.

By the way, the US Constitution does not guarantee a trial by a jury of your peers, only " ...the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, ... ."

Nevertheless, defense lawyers have made much of this Amendment, trying to ensure the "impartial" part.
