Interesting word. It apparently has a number of different meanings in Gaelic, but the basic meaning seems to be "scrape", and hence by extension "scratch" or "itch". In the "whiskey" sense it is short for sgriob drama (compare "dram").

I wonder if sgriob is etymologically related to scrape.

Yes. It is interesting. I guess it would take someone
who is familiar with PIE, or knows how to search the
roots of a word. But your comparison is neat.
