I would like to have Dr Goodword take on 'limbo', especially with regard to how a word can morph over time, from the seriousness of the depths of hell, to a more casual meaning. That would be interesting to me.
Thanks

Interesting word, now that you mention it. I'm curious, though, why you call it the depths of hell. I've always thought of it, and the on-line sources I've seen today agree, as being on the border between Heaven and Hell. If it were truly part of Hell, wouldn't that negate the metaphorical usage of being neither here nor there? You'd be "there."
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
limbo
Well Slava,
Maybe it wasn't supposed to be the depths, but after my friend who grew up in the Catholic church explained the afterlife 'system' to me, limbo seemed deep enough to me.
And now, it is so innocuously used in everyday conversation, that I am curious about the transformation that happens to words over time.
Thanks for listening.
