grizzled

Postby vacuumfoam » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:53 am

When I was a young (non-grizzled) reader, I would often come across this word. Being too lazy (at the time) to stop and look it up, I inferred from context that it meant a scruffy looking older man. Since now I am grizzled to the nth degree, it's comforting to know I'm not scruffy looking (although I have been known to grizzle a bit). However, I do not admit to being griseous; that's just too weird.

Of all the barbarous middle ages, that
Which is most barbarous is the middle age
Of man! it is—I really scarce know what;
But when we hover between fool and sage,
And don't know justly what we would be at—
A period something like a printed page,
Black letter upon foolscap, while our hair
Grows grizzled, and we are not what we were.
--George Gordon Noel Byron
