Bloop

Postby misterdoe » Mon Aug 02, 2010 1:37 pm

I see this all the time in regard to baseball. In fact, I never see it apart from baseball-related articles. It sounds vaguely onomatopoeic (sp?) but the only sound I could connect it to would be a splash...

The only way I ever hear it is in connection with mistakes
in the making of a movie: "bloopers", usually a special
at the end of the movie in the "added on features" of a DVD.
I don't watch baseball, how is it used there?

According to Wikipedia,
A blooper or bloop is a weakly hit fly ball that drops in for a single between an infielder and an outfielder. Also known as a bloop single, a dying quail, or a duck snort.
BTW while trying to find a more coherent explanation than anything I could concoct, I found this odd link: http://kindofbloop.com. Blasphemy, if you're a Miles Davis fan like me!

Interesting way to make money, too.

Yeah, that it is. *sigh* It's blasphemy and heresy and sacrilege and... and I might have to check it out!

I have some pretty good quality MIDI files I found somewhere online about ten years ago. Most are cheesy renditions of pop tunes (Britney Spears and the like), but some sound for all the world like somehow-digitized pop-jazz recordings (George Benson's "This Masquerade," David Benoit's "Freedom at Midnight," etc.) These "chiptunes" on kindofbloop.com sound like they put some thought into them...
