have seen two suggestions, one, means hysterical, other, means subject to or affected by, suggestion, hypnosis.

Does anyone know?

I think this should help: Pythia. I'm not sure why the Y changed to I.

The important part is the last sentence of the second paragraph:

"One common view has been that the Pythia delivered oracles in a frenzied state induced by vapors rising from a chasm in the rock, and that she spoke gibberish which priests reshaped into the enigmatic prophecies preserved in Greek literature."

AHA! as usual, the elders recognized the import and usefulness of "altered states"!
