Merlot

Postby passionandparadox » Wed Sep 13, 2006 1:21 am

I wish I could keep track of these forums more regularly... for now I've just been accumulating words to reccomend. Mostly for their interesting etymologies.

Merlot
a dark-blue grape used in winemaking, esp. in the Bordeaux region of France and in areas of Italy, Switzerland, and California.

[Origin: < F: lit., young blackbird, deriv. of merle merle1, prob. alluding to the color of the grape]
Merle
the blackbird, Turdus merula.
Also, merl.

[Origin: 1350–1400; ME merule < MF < L merulus, merula ousel, blackbird]

Given some of the names I've seen recently for wines, I'm surprised I haven't seen one called Turdus Merula. It might help explain how you feel the next morning if you consume too much.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
