Postby Stargzer » Sun Nov 05, 2006 11:15 pm

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

CASTIGATE
SYLLABICATION: cas·ti·gate
PRONUNCIATION: kăs' tĭ-gāt'
TRANSITIVE VERB: Inflected forms: cas·ti·gat·ed, cas·ti·gat·ing, cas·ti·gates
1. To inflict severe punishment on. See synonyms at punish.
2. To criticize severely.
ETYMOLOGY: Latin castīgāre, castīgāt-, from castus, pure. See kes- in Appendix I.
OTHER FORMS: cas'ti·ga' tion —NOUN
cas' ti·ga'tor —NOUN
Always one of my favorite words, along with excoriate.

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them."
