Theremin (noun)
An early electronic musical instrument, played by moving the hands in mid-air near two projecting antennae. It was invented in the USSR in 1920 by Léon Thérémin [or Termen] (1896-1993), a Russian engineer. It has an eerie, whistling/whooping sound, and has often been used in avant-garde music and in movie soundtracks to suggest a mysterious or other-worldly atmosphere.

These are neat! My brother used to have one. I've even seen a movie about them. They can produce some very nice sounds.

It has a short sample, but I'm sure others can be found with a little effort. Go for it!

Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
It was a young engineer's fascination with sound, and with the Theremin, that lead to the first keyboard synthesizer. Very appropriate subject with Moogfest 2010 soon upon us.
