I just used this word regarding a book, and noticed for the first time the word 'author' within it. I consulted etymonline and found all kinds of interesting antecedents: authorized (authorize, give authority to) ---> author (author, originator, creator, instigator) & (enlarger, founder, master, leader) --> augment (increase, enhance) & (to increase, make big, enlarge, enrich).
Some of our words associated with the written word or those who are able to write it still retain the sense of awe felt by those who were excluded from the 'magic' of reading and writing.
