GIFs are those now almost ubiquitous animated do-hickeys infesting many sites. My question is not about liking them or not, however. It's a poll on how you pronounce it.
Hard G as in gift?
Soft G as in the peanut butter?

Re: GIF
The only GIF I know stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It's inventors, Bob Berry & Steve Wilhite, say the pronunciation is with a soft G. He says it rhymes with the peanut butter, Jif. They say, "Choosy programmers choose GIF." In my experience programmers choose JPG.
Since there are no ubiquitous animated do-hickeys in this GIF, there must be some other definition of the word that I don't know and haven't found on the Internet

Re: GIF
Philip: the acronym you're describing has become the preferred format for some forum avatars, and is useful for animating an icon while maintaining a small file size -- such as our own smilies. I cringe a little when someone pronounces them: gifts.
I will confess, some of my favorite "animated do-hickeys" are dancing bananas...

Re: GIF
I prefer dancing babies.
Since JPG is pronounced as letters, I have usually pronounced GIF as letters also. Since the vast majority of pictures I work with are JPG's, I seldom use any of the others.

Re: GIF
I thought JPG was pronounced "jay-peg". Wasn't the original ending ".jpeg"? Or do I misconstrue?

Re: GIF
I say J P G, you say jaypeg, let's call the whole thing off.

Re: GIF
The graphics people I've met (4 states) say jay-peg. That has mostly been supplanted by PDFs (please, not 'PDF files').

PDF was invented by the devil to torment people who like .doc files better.

Re: GIF
If you want your document to print as you saw it, your photo to maintain its detail, or your logo to look respectable, you'll send a pdf rather than a doc. To every file there is a purpose, and an extension for every document under heaven.

Which in a turn, turn, turn about, leads us back into another pronounced acronym: Wiz-e-wig: WYSIWYG. Re: GIF
Not always sure. Just yesterday I was trying to enlarge a 4 x 6 into an 8 x 10 on my computer. It would only print the 4 x 6, even though I checked 8 x 10. WYSIWYG isn't always WYSIWIG!
