I am very happy for you. Surgery can be a scary thing.

And, hey, if it's major, it can be scarry, too.

I'm glad it sounds like it's gone well, best of luck getting back up to full strength. In such circumstances I'd be looking forward to a good beer, I'm sure you have something to be looking forward to enjoying!

Re: Victual
Back to food: There was a restaurant in our neighborhood named Good Eats. I would have rather it said Vittles. I never tried the Good Eats restaurant. I thought they were blowing their own horn too loudly.

We have one, more of a diner, that has a huge
black-lettered yellow sign on the roof hat
screams "EATS'. I don't think I'd try anything there.

Re: Victual
I'd prob try both at least once, for fear they knew what they were doing. I might avoid a place named Commestibles.

Re: Victual
Given that greasy spoon truck stops are, in my experience, great places for good grub, I'd go for an Eats or Vittles visit.

Re: Victual
I missed my chance to check out the vittles in that shop -- it burned down and took out half the block.

Re: Victual
Just discovered this thread that I must have missed when it started in 2009 (and when it revived in 2014).
Delighted you're still with us despite the surgery, Misterdoe.
Thai food is an important part of the Australian eating scene and certainly in the City areas, it often influences 'Australian cuisine'. I've never seen a one to ten scale of hotness preference on a menu, but commonly we get a 1 to 3 choice and occasionally 1 to 5. Most commonly it just gets served up. Interestingly the chili is often served as a garnish so you can adjust the heat yourself by leaving aside the chili. But the heat is all through in the curries of course. In Thailand, the local food (where it isn't westernised for visitors) is really hot with smotherings of fresh or dried chilis. Beware if you visit. But visit Australia, and enjoy the excellent but modified Thai tucker. Incidentally, tucker is rarely used now in Australia. Bonzer is also unusual and I haven't heard grouse in recent years. But of course I am a city slicker. Perhaps it is different in the bush. Victuals is never heard here (except in US hillbilly movies; I don't think it will catch on)

Re: Victual
I was well into my teens before discovering that vittles and victuals are the same word...

Re: Victual
In the hinterlands it is always vittles. And one frequently gets a mess of greens including the pot likker (the water after greens are boiled in it) to slather your cornbread with.

Re: Victual
Anyone here ever heard of the Victual Brothers? Started out supplying a besieged city in medieval Germany with supplies, which set them on a path that ended in outright piracy...

Re: Victual
I never had heard of them. Thanks for teaching me something today. A nice way to remember the difference between pirate and privateer, too.
