And people claim Latin is a dead language. Heck, vestiges of Ancient Rome linger still. This word is from French, who received it from Latin, who took it from Greek, who were handed it from PIE. Portions appear in numerous languages. From the Greek DIA, thoroughly, and OIKOS, house. However, the PIE root is WEIK-SLA. From there it spread to Sanskrit, Avesta, Old Persian, Lithuanian, etc. Ancient Romans used diocese to describe a governor's province. Now, of course, it is a Catholic bishop's province.
