What I like about this one is that many of the synonymous words are equally appealing - fissure, crevice, crack, slit, cleft and so on.
Presumably a well established word?

From the idea of splitting. As seeds might be said to chink open when they germinate.
The other, non-abusive, chink, of metallic money, is onomatopoeic.
