Or squibb? And why did a pharmaceutical company choose that for a name?

Well, why the company chose the name's an easy one; it was the founder's last name.

I expect the family got the name in the same way many others got theirs, from some ancestor's physical or temperamental aspect. As some got their names from a profession (Smith, Taylor, etc.), so other's were given names by the high and mighty to describe them, and they stuck.

Other's names came from superstition, too. Gorbachev means 'of the hunchback', probably given as a way of tricking the devil into thinking the person isn't worth it. I've also met a 'Bezpaltsev', meaning 'fingerless'.

By the way, for what it's worth, one of these days I'll be using this as my opening stab at Wordle.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

No one knows where this one came from. I can't find any history on it.
