I think this is a kind of apophasis (here & here on the Agora), also called praeteritio (elsewhere). A way of saying how virtuous you are without saying how virtuous you are. Or, saying how virtuous you are by saying how unvirtuous someone else is.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
