Clemency
Disposition to be merciful. From Latin, clemencia, for calmness. However, the PIE root, klei, means to lean. How this evolved is anyone’s guess.

From what I gather, the path is from the idea of being 'inclined' to something. Being inclined is a positive sense, with disinclined the negative. Inclined to be gentle or forgiving, with a few alterations in spelling and pronunciation along the way, can be seen as leading to clemency.
What struck me in my meanderings was the discovery that clinic is part of this family, too. At one time, a clinic was someone who was bedridden, attended by a clinic, a doctor who makes house-calls.
