Potable

Postby William Hupy » Sat Aug 31, 2019 1:11 pm

From Latin, to drink, according to one dictionary. we pilfered it from French. But now I am confused, as I see from today’s Goodword that the verb for to drink in Latin is bibere. Is there a subtle distinction I am missing?

No particular distinction between the two, just language development and changes. Imbibe is from the Latin bibere, but bibere itself comes from PIE poi-.

A good place for potables is at a symposium, by the by.
