Cancrine

I discovered this very interesting word at wordsmith.org today. It means ''Reading forward the same as backward. Palindromic.'' It also means ''Relating to crabs.''

Treated here: http://www.alphadictionary.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=1430

For some reason, though, the palindromic sense is not mentioned.

A related word (not yet featured here) is cancrizans. This odd-looking word is a musical term with the following meaning:

A canon in which the second voice (or instrument or part) repeats the notes of the theme sung or played by the first, but in reverse order. Also known as a "crab canon".

(From the present participle of the Medieval Latin verb cancrizare = to move like a crab. Crabs actually move sideways, but they were once thought to move backwards!)

I should add that I am a music teacher, pianist and classical music enthusiast.
