I can't come up with a verb meaning the opposite of lie, can you? Tell the truth, now. Speak the truth. Be honest. But no one word that's the antithesis to lie.
No, I won't stand for stand.

Re: Truth
Although aver is supposed to mean assert, the ver part is surely related to veracity and truthfulness. So maybe originally...?

Re: Truth
Well, aver has been to the Good Doctor's office twice, here and here, but doesn't quite make it to being simply meaning telling the truth. The frog example seems to indicate it can be falsely used, to aver an untruth.

Re: Truth
Thanks Slava. I much enjoyed both entries. Whatever happened to MTC and Mark Bailey and the others of those days? I know that Perry Lassiter is no longer with us. But are we all so old that our tenure here is necessarily short?

Re: Truth
Mark Bailey is long gone, but MTC just posted yesterday.
As for length of tenure here, I'm not sure what short would be. I've been haunting the site for 16 years now.
