This will be a difficult one to treat here, I should imagine. It appears to have no etymology, so there's not much of a story to tell about it.

Any diggers out there who wish to delve the depths of the Internet and/or physical reference books? Chime in!

According to the online dictionaries, it is imitative of the sound of galloping hooves or a hunting horn.

Wiktionary mentions an adverbial comparative "more tantivy" and superlative "most tantivy", which sound rather odd. I suppose one could use them poetically, e.g:

Each rider used his whip to spur and chivvy,
To urge his horse to gallop more tantivy.
