Bulwark

Postby Modi » Tue Feb 03, 2009 3:39 am

From onelook.com:
- noun: a fence-like structure around a deck
- noun: an embankment built around a space for defensive purposes
- noun: a protective structure of stone or concrete; extends from shore into the water to prevent a beach from washing away
- verb: defend with a bulwark

Etymology from etymonline.com:
c.1416, from M.Du. bulwerke or M.H.G. bolwerc, from bole "plank, tree trunk" + werc "work."

We tend to bulwark our children with our bodies when in danger.

A good, solid, sturdy word, Modi!

It's used in an old hymn written by Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God:
A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing.
