Carlot

Postby Grogie » Wed Feb 11, 2009 3:49 pm

A person living in the country. ''Many carlots, on moving to the city, find it hard to adjust to urban life.''

Better than rube, hick, country boy, goat roper, !@!$-kicker, redneck, etc.
Carlot has a certain elegance...

You can take the carlot out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the carlot...

Isn't this where you go to buy a new automobile?

Plus:

From answers.com:

a peasant, in the pejorative sense
"And he hath bought the cottage and the bounds
That the old carlot once was master of."
-Shakespeare, As You Like It

So perhaps it's not quite better than rube, hick, etc. Just a fancier way of belittling the bumpkins.

From OneLook Dictionary:
Quick definitions (carlot)

(n.) A churl; a boor; a peasant or countryman.

(This definition is from the 1913 Webster's Dictionary and may be outdated.)
Would a boorish peasant whose contract of indentured servitude was sold to another person be considered a used carlot?

Would a churlish prostitute be a carlot harlot?

If she's from the boonies, I suppose. However, can a female be a churl? I've always associated that one with males.

No doubt an elderly country resident is a used carlot.
