flimflam / bosh

Postby scw1217 » Mon Aug 03, 2009 2:57 pm

A twofer. My mother referred to someone as being "flimflammed" and that made me look it up. Upon doing so, it was defined with the word "bosh", also an interesting word and one I am adding to my vocabulary. "What a load of bosh!"
bosh
–noun
absurd or foolish talk; nonsense.
Origin:
1830–35; < Turk boş empty; popularized from its use in the novel Ayesha (1834) by British author James J. Morier (1780–1849)
flim⋅flam
–noun
1. a trick or deception, esp. a swindle or confidence game involving skillful persuasion or clever manipulation of the victim.
2. a piece of nonsense; twaddle; bosh.
–verb (used with object)
3. to trick, deceive, swindle, or cheat: A fortuneteller flimflammed her out of her savings.

I kind of like "twaddle" myself.

And just think, one who engages in twaddle is a twaddler. If I didn't think it would get me in trouble, I'd really love to use this one. Perhaps is private, sniping, conversation? "All the bosh that twit's handing out, he's such a twaddler."

Nope. Just distracted with avoiding flim-flammery in not-Denver. Good to see familiar [faces] here, though. :D
