Brings to mind the boudoir of houses, at least in the
mid1800's, maybe at other times as well. Also Harem.

More analogous is the "menstrual hut" that I saw associated with an African tribe. When women live together, it isn't uncommon for their menstrual periods to synchronize, and at the appropriate time, the women of the tribe left their homes and lived together in the menstrual hut.

Don't kill the messenger on this one, ok? I didn't make a single joke.

banana - Indian name for the place where the young boys of a family are secluded. Never painted yellow, except on a few holy days.

Nice try, but....

Then again, Beethoven's favorite fruit is always welcome.

FAR BE IT FROM KILLING THE MESSENGER.
my grandmother was Indian(she preferred that term to
Nat. Am.)
Many, many of the Plains Nations had this hut, tent, or
whatever, for women in their moon phase. It is not
just African.

And the Sun Dance (outlawed by US Gov for long time)
allowed the men to "bleed" as well, because the women
did it for the good and for the health of the tribe, so
did the men.

The movies "A Man Called Horse", and its sequel
"Return of......" show this in an eminent and holy manner.

I would be very grateful if you could tell me where
you learned this: as a minor student of cultures, it
fascinates me: never, ever heard this before.
Obviously India, but .......??????

It was just a joke, changing the "z" to "b" for boy. It wasn't among the best, but I'm trying to evoke some responses...

OK I got ya!

But I do know that is was done in some cultures, the
Aussie Aborgine did it in some places: just curious.

It was a time to initiate them into the secrets of
manhood before their "rites" took place.

So you evoked and provoked on me.

provocation - a recreational trip to Italy in pursuit of fine, smoked cheese. Alternatively, a skiing trip to Utah.

You can keep the ski trip to anywhere.
I'm going hermit (except when I have to leave the house)
closed all my curtains and drapes, and don't want to see
snow again until it comes in various colors.
