NOUN: 1. The highest degree of quality or purity in diamonds or pearls. 2. The foremost rank or quality: a pianist of the first water.

ETYMOLOGY: Probably translation of Arabic mā', water, water luster.

Though this isn't a word, I would like to see the Dr.'s take on it, especially the etymology. Just what is first water?
