Exiguous

Exiguous (adjective)

Meagre, scanty. (From Latin exiguus, from exigere, to measure out.)
I always think this word sounds as if it means the opposite, with its echoes of 'exceptional' and 'prodigious'.

"Your vocabulary is exiguous", said the teacher.
"Thank you very much", replied the boy proudly.
