Here's one that's made quite a change in meaning. It used to mean "threaten" or even "declare," as in: “the ceremony of a formal denunciation of war has of late fallen into disuse.”

I suspect it is the de- prefix that has made it take a downward meaning. Or I could be off my rocker.

De-rockered, as it were.
