Lose/loose

I am increasingly seeing the word 'lose' spelled as 'loose'. This seems to be quite a recent tendency. Has anyone else here noticed this trend?
No-one I personally know uses the spelling 'loose' when they mean 'lose'. I wonder if it is largely an American phenomenon.
Any thoughts?
