Idioms. Idiomatic speech is speech that contains phrases that are not analyzable, than can only be interpreted as wholes. You can say, "The coast is clear" far away from any coast, because we know this phrase, as a whole, means "There's no one looking".
Adages. Adages can be thought of as "folk wisdom". They make up a folk philosophy, the accumulated insights of a culture, passed down from generation to generation. "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise," is an instruction, an insight into how to lead our lives that has been put together and handed down by generations of English speakers.
In the examples below, pictures illustrating the literal sense of idioms and adages are presented as hints. See if you can guess the idiom or adage each picture represents. Do not use capital letters (except "I") or punctuation: commas, periods or question marks. Apostrophes are OK.
